This Week’s Thought: Leadership is influence, and influence begins with our words. Effective team communication is crucial, especially in tense moments when our first reaction can easily become our worst one. That’s why great leaders don’t just speak—they pause, reflect, and respond with intention.

The Empowerment Monday Insight: In the heat of a difficult conversation or when tensions rise, it’s easy to fire back with emotion instead of wisdom. But a leader’s strength isn’t measured by quick replies—it’s measured by thoughtful responses. That’s where the 5-seconds rule comes in. A brief pause gives space for clarity, empathy, and better decision-making. It creates a gap between trigger and response—a moment where true leadership lives.

One simple but powerful tool to help with team communication is the THINK acrostic:

  • T – Is it True?
  • H – Is it Helpful?
  • I – Is it Inspiring?
  • N – Is it Necessary?
  • K – Is it Kind?

Before you speak, run your words through this filter. Not everything that is true is helpful, and not everything that is necessary needs to be harsh. Leadership is about choosing words that build up, not tear down.

Where in your leadership do you need to pause before you speak this week? How will this intentionality positive impact your team communication and influence with others? Share in the comments.

Lead with wisdom. Speak with grace. Empower through words. You’ve got this.
