This past week, I had a conversation with Tim Shurr on Lead Empowered TV that’s been lingering with me this week. We discussed fascinating insights into self-sabotage and how it affects personal growth.
We talked about self-sabotage, but not in the dramatic sense. Not blowing things up. More subtle than that. The hesitation before a hard conversation. The procrastination masked as “one more thing to fix.” The self-doubt that sounds reasonable enough to trust.
What struck me most is this:
Most leaders aren’t held back by a lack of skill or effort. They’re held back by patterns they’ve practiced for years without realizing it.
Tim put words to something I see constantly with small business owners – smart, capable people whose influence is quietly undermined by self-sabotaging behaviours such as fear of conflict, perfectionism, or the need to control outcomes. None of it intentional, but all of it costly.
Leadership influence doesn’t erode overnight. It fades in moments where we choose comfort over clarity, or avoidance over ownership, often due to self-sabotage.
Saturday feels like the right time to pause and ask: Where might I be getting in my own way?
If you’re a small business owner who knows something in your behavior is limiting your leadership impact, but you’re not sure how to shift it, possibly due to self-sabotage, I’d like to help.
I’m offering a complimentary coaching session to explore what’s really going on beneath the surface and where change can begin.
No pressure. Just clarity.
If that resonates, send me a message and let’s talk about overcoming self-sabotage.
