Some days leadership looks calm on the outside, but everything behind the scenes feels like it’s one step from chaos. You show up steady, say the right things, and you look composed. But inside, you’re juggling stress, solving problems quietly, and hoping nothing cracks. This scenario often leads to burnout, especially in leadership roles where the pressure is immense.
That’s called “holding it together,” and it’s a direct path to burnout in leadership roles, risking burnout of leaders.
And here’s the problem… the more we perfect that look, the more we unknowingly leak influence, increasing the risk of burnout among leadership.
When everything appears fine, people assume:
- you don’t need support
- the pressure isn’t real
- your expectations are effortless to meet
So they disengage, stop bringing ideas, and hesitate to challenge you. At the end of the day, they mirror your mask, contributing to a cycle that fosters burnout in leadership.
I’ve seen this over and over: leaders admired for composure… yet followed at a distance, exhibiting signs of leadership burnout.
Influence grows not from perfection, but from grounded honesty. Not oversharing. Not emotional dumping. But naming reality with courage:
“I don’t have this fully figured out yet, and here’s how we’ll move forward together.”
That kind of honesty invites alignment. It builds trust. It gives others permission to think, own, and contribute.
My take? Strength isn’t the absence of cracks. Strength is choosing authenticity over image and avoiding leadership burnout.
This week, try one shift: Name one pressure you’ve been carrying silently, and then share the learning, not the drama to prevent burnout.
You don’t lose authority by being real. You lose authority by pretending you don’t feel anything at all, leading to a risk of burnout in leadership.
