Yesterday morning I was thinking about leadership while drinking my coffee and scrolling through my calendar – nothing fancy, just normal life stuff. And one idea about leadership development kept coming back to me.

Leadership journeys really start with one simple mindset shift: moving from “I need to look like a leader” to “I need to get better as a person.” In fact, this is the starting point of true leadership development for many people.

That sounds simple, but in practice it changes a lot. Importantly, it sets the foundation for leadership development in your daily life.

When your focus is on looking like a leader, you tend to play it safe. You avoid admitting mistakes, you over-explain decisions, and you care more about how things appear than how they actually are. You perform instead of lead.

When your focus is on becoming better, your behavior shifts. You ask for feedback instead of dodging it. You listen before you react. You’re more willing to say, “I got that wrong.” You care about your team as people, not just as productivity catalysts. This approach supports your long-term leadership development.

I’ve worked with plenty of leaders who looked polished but created stressful, disengaging environments. I’ve also seen less flashy leaders who built strong, trusting teams simply because they were decent, consistent, and self-aware.

So today, as you go about your weekend – errands, family time, rest, whatever it is – it’s worth asking yourself a practical question:

Am I trying to impress people, or am I trying to grow? Focusing on leadership development can help clarify your answer.

In my experience, choosing growth makes you a better leader every single time.

And as Romans 12:2 reminds us… “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
