Mondays can feel all too familiar – your morning coffee in hand, inbox already calling, and a long list staring back at you before the day barely gets started. It’s tempting to dive straight into “task mode” and not slow down for anything or anyone, but that can be a sign of leadership overwhelm. In fact, leadership overwhelm can sneak up on anyone who moves quickly without mindful pauses.
But here’s what I really believe: busy is not a badge of honor.
We’ve somehow made packed calendars and nonstop hustle look like leadership. Back-to-back meetings, constant urgency, never a moment to think. But when leaders live in that state, their judgment starts to slip. You react instead of lead. You rush instead of reflect. You look productive… but you’re not always effective. Leadership overwhelm is more common than we often admit, and it rarely leads to sustainable results.
Leadership actually needs breathing room. When you create space to think, you make better decisions and show up calmer for your team. If you’re always moving at full speed, you’re quietly teaching your people that speed matters more than clarity, and that never ends well. Also, remember that leadership overwhelm limits your ability to be fully present and strategic.
This topic feels especially timely because next week, my interview with ~April Wyett~ airs (Tuesday, July 27th) on e360tv, YouTube, LinkedIn, and more. April talks a lot about how our nervous systems impact the way we lead. One thing that stuck with me is this idea that slowing down isn’t weakness – it’s actually where real leadership shows up.
So this week, try slowing just one thing down. Pause before responding. Take five minutes before a big decision. Let stillness be part of your leadership. Furthermore, addressing leadership overwhelm can help you cultivate a more thoughtful and inspiring approach.
In my view, the strongest leaders aren’t the busiest – they’re the most present.
