One of the sneakiest leadership problems isn’t weakness – it’s strength. That’s why self-awareness is essential for any leader.

The very things that helped you succeed early on can slowly start working against you if you’re not paying attention.

Driven leaders push harder… even when it’s time to pause. Decisive leaders move fast… and sometimes stop listening. Helpful leaders step in… and accidentally take ownership away from others.

None of this comes from bad intent. It comes from overusing what once worked.

Here’s what makes it tricky: strengths usually get rewarded. People praise them. Results follow. So we lean into them even more, until they quietly turn into liabilities.

I’ve seen it happen a lot. Leaders wonder why their team is disengaged or hesitant, and they don’t realize their greatest strength is crowding everyone else out.

This week, try this simple check-in: Ask yourself, “What do people rely on me for too much?”

That answer often points straight to an overused strength.

In my opinion, strong leadership isn’t about dialing back who you are. It’s about knowing when to use your strengths, and when to get out of the way.
