This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about a simple framework from Chip Ingram after listening to an interview with my good friend, Russ Hedge. Navigating job loss can be incredibly challenging, and this framework offers practical guidance in tough times.
Circumstances + Perspective = Experience.
Few circumstances hit harder than job loss. Especially when it comes suddenly. Especially when it’s part of a mass layoff. One email, one meeting, one calendar invite, and everything shifts.
The circumstance is real. The loss is real. The fear, anger, and uncertainty are real. Reflection isn’t about pretending otherwise.
But perspective quietly shapes what happens next.
Some people experience job loss as a verdict on their worth. Others experience it as grief and a turning point. Same event. Different experience. One takes it as a direct reflection on the value, and another as an opportunity for new, and perhaps even better doors to open.
As leaders, this matters deeply. Not just for how we personally process loss, but for how we hold space for others when livelihoods are disrupted. Perspective doesn’t erase pain, but it can prevent pain from becoming identity.
As you head into this weekend, I invite you to sit with these questions:
- What circumstances am I facing that I’ve been fighting instead of processing?
- What story am I telling myself about what this moment says about me?
- If this season were shaping me rather than defining me, what might it be preparing me for?
Reflection doesn’t change circumstances. But it can change the experience – and that changes everything
Show yourself grace this weekend. Growth often starts in the quiet after the shock.
P.S. This Tuesday, February 17th, my conversation with Elia Gourgouris Ph.D. airs on Lead Empowered TV. We dive into 7 Keys to Navigating a Crisis, including how leaders can show up with clarity, compassion, and steadiness during moments like mass layoffs. I hope you’ll join us.
