Most leaders believe they’re giving good feedback because they’re being “nice.” However, leadership feedback is about much more than simply kindness.

They soften the message. They cushion the critique. They circle the issue instead of naming it.

And they walk away thinking they handled it well.

But here’s the hard truth: feedback that avoids clarity doesn’t help anyone grow.

When we dilute the message to protect someone’s feelings, we often protect ourselves from discomfort instead. The result? The person leaves encouraged… but unchanged. Or worse – confused.

Kindness without honesty creates blind spots. Honesty without courage creates half-truths.

Real empowerment happens when someone clearly understands:

  • What’s working
  • What’s not
  • What needs to change
  • And that you believe they’re capable of changing it

That last part matters. Feedback isn’t about criticism. It’s about belief.

This week, if there’s a conversation you’ve been softening or delaying, ask yourself: Am I being clear or just comfortable?

You can be direct and respectful at the same time. In fact, that’s what strong leadership looks like.

In my opinion, the most caring leaders are not the ones who avoid hard conversations. They’re the ones who have them with clarity and conviction.
