Trust rarely disappears in dramatic fashion. It erodes quietly. Trust in leadership can decline not through one major failure, but through a pattern of overlooked details – missed follow-ups, inconsistent communication, shifting expectations, or saying one thing in a meeting and doing another in execution.
And the opposite is also true. Trust isn’t built by a single big gesture. It’s built in small, steady moments that feel almost too ordinary to matter, until they compound into something solid.
This might look like a quick check-in that didn’t have to happen; a promise kept when no one was watching; a difficult truth spoken early instead of late; or a leader admitting, “I missed that,” and owning it without deflection.
These moments don’t make headlines in an organization, but they shape everything.
Most teams don’t suffer from a lack of strategy. They suffer from a lack of reliability in the small things that strategy depends on.
When trust is strong, communication becomes faster, feedback becomes easier, and accountability feels shared instead of enforced. When trust is weak, even simple conversations start to carry tension.
Here’s the reflection for today:
Where are you unintentionally creating “trust friction” in your leadership—small gaps between what you say and what people experience?
And just as importantly:
Where are you already building trust without realizing it?
Leadership isn’t defined in the big moments as often as we like to think. It’s revealed in the consistency of the small ones. Because in the end, people don’t decide whether to trust you based on your intentions. They decide based on patterns.
