If you’ve spent any time leading in retail like I did for many years, you’ve probably felt it. These moments perfectly highlight the complexities of retail leadership. The customer is waiting. A shipment is late. Someone called in sick. Sales are behind plan. Corporate wants answers. Your team is looking to you.

And somewhere in the middle of all that pressure, you convince yourself that you have to know exactly what to do.

Many leaders wear that expectation like a badge of honor. The problem is…it’s exhausting.

I remember countless days in retail where I believed my value as a leader was directly connected to having the right answer. If I hesitated, I worried my team would lose confidence in me. If I asked for input, I feared it would make me look unprepared. So I carried many problems myself.

Many leaders are doing the same thing today. They’re overwhelmed, mentally exhausted, and quietly wondering why leadership feels so lonely. Here’s the truth many leaders never hear:

Your team doesn’t need a leader who knows everything. They need a leader who creates an environment where everyone can contribute.

Ironically, pretending to have all the answers often creates the very culture leaders are trying to avoid. People stop speaking up. Innovation slows. Problems stay hidden. Employees become dependent instead of empowered. Soon, the leader becomes the bottleneck.

The strongest leaders aren’t the ones with all the answers – they are the ones who consistently asked better questions.

  • “What are you seeing?”
  • “What do you think we should do?”
  • “What obstacles are getting in your way?”
  • “How can I support you?”

Those questions communicate trust. They develop future leaders instead of followers. They uncover ideas you may never have considered. Most importantly, they remind your team that leadership isn’t about one person carrying the entire organization. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe enough to think, contribute, and grow.

If you’re feeling the weight of leadership today, here’s something to reflect on:

What problem are you trying to solve alone that your team could help you solve together?

You don’t lose credibility by admitting you don’t have every answer. You gain credibility when your team sees you value their insight. Leadership isn’t about proving your intelligence. It’s about multiplying the intelligence that’s already around you.

Reflection Questions

  • Where have I been carrying unnecessary pressure because I believed I had to know everything?
  • When was the last time I genuinely asked my team for their perspective before offering my own?
  • Am I developing problem-solvers, or am I creating people who wait for me to make every decision?
  • What conversation could I have next week that would invite greater ownership from my team?

Have a great weekend!
