If you’re a school leader, you’ve probably experienced this before: Your faculty is working incredibly hard. Teachers are staying late. Counselors are carrying overwhelming caseloads. Instructional coaches are juggling initiatives. Assistant principals are putting out fires all day long. Everyone is busy! But are you achieving true Team Alignment?

At the end of the day, it still feels like everyone is pulling in different directions. That feeling isn’t usually a people problem. It’s an alignment problem.

Throughout my career as a college faculty member, department chair, dean of academic affairs, and leadership strategist, I’ve seen outstanding educators become discouraged – not because they lacked talent or commitment, but because they lacked a shared understanding of where they were headed together.

Without Team Alignment…

  • Every new initiative feels like “one more thing.”
  • Communication becomes inconsistent.
  • Departments begin operating in silos.
  • Meetings generate discussion but little momentum.
  • Teachers lose confidence in changing priorities.
  • Leaders spend more time managing confusion than developing people.

Eventually, even your highest-performing educators begin asking themselves, “What are we really trying to accomplish?”

The unfortunate reality is that most educators don’t leave because they stop caring. They leave because they’re exhausted from caring deeply while navigating constant uncertainty. Alignment changes that.

When leaders intentionally create alignment around vision, expectations, communication, and culture, remarkable things begin to happen.

Teachers stop competing for priorities and start collaborating. Conversations become clearer. Decisions become easier. Accountability feels less like compliance and more like shared ownership. Most importantly, people begin to see how their daily work contributes to something much bigger than themselves.

Here’s a question worth reflecting on this weekend:

If I asked every member of my leadership team to describe our top three priorities for this school year, would their answers sound the same?

If the answer is “probably not,” you’ve identified one of your greatest leadership opportunities.

Alignment isn’t created during a single retreat. It’s built one conversation… One expectation… One decision… One relationship at a time.

As another school year approaches, resist the temptation to focus only on new programs, new curriculum, or new goals.

Instead, ask yourself: How can I create greater clarity before I ask for greater performance?

Because aligned teams don’t just accomplish more. They experience greater trust, healthier collaboration, and renewed purpose. And that’s the kind of culture every educator deserves.
