If you’re leading a growing business right now, chances are you’re carrying more than anyone around you realizes. Every day, you’re making decisions that affect not only the future of your company, but also the livelihoods of the people who depend on it. Executive Resilience has never been more important, as you’re responsible for making payroll, retaining great employees, serving customers well, navigating rising costs, and finding ways to grow the business in an increasingly uncertain environment. While everyone else is looking to you for answers, you may quietly be wondering whether you’re making the right decisions yourself.

Leadership can be incredibly lonely. Not because you’re surrounded by too few people, but because there are very few people with whom you can be completely honest. You can’t always share your concerns with your employees because you don’t want to create unnecessary anxiety. Your clients expect confidence. Your family has already sacrificed enough. So you carry the pressure yourself, hoping tomorrow will feel a little lighter than today.

The challenge is that pressure has a way of changing us, often without us realizing it. We become more reactive than intentional. Our patience grows shorter. We start making decisions simply because they’re urgent instead of because they’re the right decisions. We solve problems our team could handle because it’s faster than coaching them, and before long, work follows us home. We replay conversations in our minds, wake up thinking about tomorrow’s challenges, and wonder why it feels like we can never fully disconnect.

What Leaders Must Understand About Executive Resilience

Here’s what many leaders don’t realize: your team doesn’t simply hear your words: they experience your emotional state. When you’re anxious, uncertainty begins to spread. When you’re rushed, people hesitate to bring you important issues. When every day feels like crisis management, your team slowly begins to believe that’s simply what your culture has become.

I’ve worked with leaders who believed their biggest challenge was communication, accountability, or execution. While those issues certainly matter, they often weren’t the root problem. As we dug deeper, we discovered that the pressure they were carrying had quietly become the pressure everyone else was experiencing. Without intending to, they had created an environment where stress became contagious.

The healthiest organizations aren’t led by people who never feel overwhelmed. They’re led by leaders who have learned how to remain grounded when everything around them feels uncertain. That’s what emotional steadiness looks like. It isn’t pretending everything is okay or hiding your emotions. It’s creating enough stability that your team can continue doing their best work, even when business isn’t easy.

As you head into the weekend, I’d encourage you to spend a few minutes reflecting on one question: When people walked away from conversations with me this week, did they leave feeling more confident or more anxious?

That question isn’t meant to produce guilt. It’s meant to create awareness. And awareness is where meaningful leadership growth begins.

If this reflection resonated with you, I recently explored this topic in greater depth in my Forbes Coaches Council article, “The Leadership Skill No One Teaches: Emotional Steadiness Under Pressure.”
