Good leaders want to help, but if we help too much, it can actually become a leadership liability.

Someone on the team is struggling, so we step in.

A problem surfaces, so we provide the answer.

Someone isn’t moving quickly enough, so we take something off their plate.

It feels like leadership.

But sometimes, being helpful is actually preventing the people around us from growing.

There’s a subtle line between supporting someone and rescuing them.

When we cross it too often, we can unintentionally teach people that when things get difficult, the leader will eventually step in and handle it.

Over time, something dangerous happens.

Their problems become our problems.

And instead of building capable, confident people, we create dependency.

Before You Give the Answer, Ask a Question

One of the hardest disciplines of leadership is resisting the urge to immediately solve a problem you already know how to solve.

It’s especially difficult when you know you could fix it faster yourself.

But efficiency isn’t always the goal.

Sometimes, development is.

The next time someone brings you a problem, instead of immediately offering the solution, try asking:

What do you think we should do?

Or:

If I weren’t available, how would you handle this?

Or even:

What options have you considered so far?

Those few seconds of silence that follow might accomplish more than your answer ever could.

Help People Carry Their Own Weight

Empowerment doesn’t mean abandoning people.

It means giving them the support, clarity, resources, and confidence they need to take ownership.

There will absolutely be times when your team needs your expertise. There will be situations where stepping in is necessary.

But that shouldn’t be our automatic response.

Sometimes the most helpful thing we can do is not rescue someone from the productive struggle that will help them grow.

Great leaders don’t simply make life easier for the people they lead.

They help people become stronger, wiser, and more capable.

So here’s your Empowerment Monday question:

Are you helping your people grow or simply making their problems disappear?

The difference matters.

Keep leading. Keep empowering.
